Penticton Plaid Shirters Donate Again!

The Penticton Staff were recently pleased to present their charitable donations to the “Plaid Shirt Fund” to worthy Penticton Societies. The Recipients were as follows: “Discovery House” – $500; “Lighthouse” – $500 and “Summerland Asset Development Initiative” (SADI) – $450. The total donations were cumulative over the years 2014 to 2015. Penticton Staff wear “plaid shirts” every Friday and donate $2 to the Plaid Shirt Jar fund.

Discovery House’s vision, from their website, is that no one person should have to suffer from the mental, emotional spiritual and physical anguish of addiction to alcohol and drugs. They provide their clients with the tools and skills necessary to achieve freedom from active addiction. They also provide clients with access to a wide range of services and amenities including low-cost or subsidized fitness programs, free counseling services, employment preparation, mental health services, public health services, legal advocacy, as well as many others. “In house” programs consist of life skills training, 12- step recovery groups, topical discussion groups, guest facilitators, and educational media focusing on the bio-psycho social elements of addiction.

Lighthouse’s purpose from their website: The Lighthouse Low Barrier Shelter seeks to end the homelessness of our most vulnerable men and women in the South Okanagan by providing safe, year round and easily accessible shelter and support services guided by a belief in the intrinsic value and dignity of all people. To provide a safe, secure shelter with supportive services, that is easily accessible to people experiencing homelessness in the South Okanagan regardless of their current challenges. We believe that all people deserve the basic necessities of life including food and shelter as the first step on the path to self sufficiency.

The Summerland Asset Development Initiative mission statement from their website: The Summerland Asset Development Initiative (SADI) is a youth driven movement that provides opportunities, activities, and support for the Summerland youth and families. We work within the asset development model that believes that all youth benefit from opportunities to develop their positive qualities and a deeper connection to their community while building their inner capacity to make good choices, become healthy individuals, adapt easily to change and reach their full potential.
