PROJECT

Knox Mountain Management Plan

Client: City of Kelowna Infrastructure Planning
Location: Kelowna, BC
Completion date: Fall 2011

Outland Design Landscape Architecture, in collaboration with sub-consultants Juliet Anderton Consulting and Ecoscape Environmental Consultants, was responsible for the development of a 10 year management plan for Knox Mountain Park, Kelowna’s premier natural area park, located immediately north of the city’s downtown core. The Management Plan is a strategic, forward-looking document that provides an integrated and sustainable approach to Park planning. It is designed to sustain and improve the environmental health of Knox Mountain Park for future generations while enhancing visitors’ experiences within the Park. Outland has led a process of public consultation, external and internal stakeholder meetings and extensive consultation with key City of Kelowna staff members to gather information that has informed the management plan. As a sub-component of the project, Bufo Incorporated prepared the comprehensive signage plan for the park.

The management plan identifies the key challenges for the management of the park, and out of this establishes a long term vision and strategic goals, that aim to balance ecosystem integrity, recreation and stewardship. Informed by this framework, the management concept plan identifies key areas for environmental protection, development of recreational amenities, and priorities for capital upgrades and maintenance support. Finally, the management plan lays out an implementation plan that provides a focus and defines the capital and operational program work plan that ensures the KMMP will meet its vision and strategic goals. The plan was unanimously adopted by council in the fall of 2011.
